The Polahi nomadic tribe permits their members to marry family because there are so few choices.
It is considered normal if a father marries his daughter or a son marries his mother. Kompas online quoted photographer Ebbi Vebri Adrian, who often has contact with the tribe, as saying that despite their intermarriage, the tribe did not appear to suffer from the genetic deterioration usually associated with the practice. “What is strange is that none of their descendents appeared handicapped, as is usual with intermarriages,” he said.
40-year-old Jowali Waiswa of Uganda is married to his 25-year-old niece, the daughter of his sister.
Waiswa secretly married his sister’s daughter and has stayed with her for six years, during which they have produced three children. Magumba said in 2006, when the girl was sent home to collect fees, her uncle asked the mother to allow him stay with her at his place, pledging to pay the school fees and support her with all the basic requirements. Hasfa Nabirye, the mother of the girl, said when she visited the brother five months later, her daughter was pregnant.

60-year-old Valerie Spruill of Doylestown, Ohio discovered 6 years after her husband Percy's death that he was also her biological father. Her uncle told her the truth and she confirmed it through a DNA test.
"I don't know if he ever knew or not. That conversation didn't come up," she said. "I think if he did know, there is no way he could have told me." Spruill met and married her husband-father in Akron and settled in Doylestown, a working class suburb of about 2,300. It was her second marriage. Spruill was a nice man, a good provider. He was kind to her three children from her previous marriage. "We had a good life," she said.I'm not sure if this is the same couple, but there is a marriage record from Boone County, Kentucky on May 6, 1994 between two African Americans named Percy A. Spruill and Valerie Smith.
